Decades of oil exploration and spill incidents in the Niger Delta have profoundly altered the physicochemical properties of soils in affected communities, disrupting agricultural productivity and ecological stability. This study assesses the impact of crude oil contamination on selected physicochemical properties of soils in three communities within Ogoniland, Rivers State, South South Nigeria. Surface and subsurface soil samples are collected from contaminated sites and paired control plots using a stratified random sampling design. Parameters measured include pH, electrical conductivity, total organic carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, bulk density, porosity, and total petroleum hydrocarbons using standard analytical protocols. The study also evaluates microbial population counts to understand the biological health of contaminated soils. Spatial mapping of contamination gradients is performed using GPS-referenced sample coordinates. Results are expected to demonstrate significant reductions in nutrient availability and structural soil quality in heavily impacted plots, consistent with suppressed microbial activity. Statistical comparisons between contaminated and control plots are conducted using independent-samples t-tests. The study directly informs ongoing remediation and restoration efforts referenced in national and international environmental governance frameworks. Findings contribute practical data for soil quality baseline establishment in the broader Niger Delta remediation agenda, which is central to sustainable agricultural recovery in South South Nigeria.
