Graphic Design of Educational Infographics on Malaria Prevention for Rural Communities in Delta State

Malaria remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in Delta State, South South Nigeria, with rural communities bearing a disproportionate burden due to poor awareness of preventive measures and limited healthcare access. This project applies visual communication design principles to the development of a series of infographics aimed at improving malaria prevention knowledge in rural communities across Ughelli North and Isoko local government areas. A formative assessment conducted through focus groups with community members, health workers, and teachers identified prevalent misconceptions about malaria transmission, insecticide-treated net use, and fever management. Based on these findings, ten infographic panels were designed addressing topics including mosquito life cycles, proper net installation, early symptom recognition, and care-seeking pathways. The visual design employs simplified icons, limited text in both English and Urhobo, high-contrast colour coding, and culturally familiar imagery. Printed prototypes were displayed in community health centres, primary schools, and market gathering points. Pre- and post-exposure assessments with two hundred community members measured changes in knowledge, attitudes, and stated intentions regarding malaria prevention. Results show a twenty-nine percentage point increase in correct knowledge scores and a forty percent increase in stated intention to use insecticide-treated nets consistently. The project recommends integration into the Delta State Malaria Programme's community communication strategy.
