The Role of Insurance Brokers in Policy Distribution in Rivers State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the role of insurance brokers in the distribution of insurance policies in Rivers State, South South Nigeria. Insurance brokers serve as critical intermediaries between insurers and policyholders, facilitating access to products tailored to client needs while ensuring regulatory compliance. In Rivers State, the oil and gas economy creates a distinctive market environment with complex risk profiles requiring specialized brokerage services. However, the contribution of brokers to overall insurance penetration in the state and their effectiveness in reaching retail and corporate clients remain insufficiently documented in academic literature. This research adopts a descriptive survey methodology, drawing on primary data from 60 licensed insurance brokers registered with the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB) and 200 corporate clients in Port Harcourt. Questionnaires and structured interviews assess broker performance, client satisfaction, ethical conduct, and the alignment of brokerage services with NAICOM's market development guidelines. The study also evaluates technology adoption among brokers and its effect on operational efficiency and client reach. Preliminary findings indicate that while brokers significantly influence corporate insurance decisions, retail market penetration through brokerage remains limited due to cost and geographic constraints. The study recommends incentivized regulatory frameworks to encourage brokers to expand into underserved retail segments.
