Insurance Industry Contribution to Capital Market Development in Nigeria

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This research examines the contribution of the Nigerian insurance industry to capital market development, focusing on the investment activities of insurance companies listed on the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX). Insurance companies are institutional investors that channel significant premium income into capital market instruments including equities, bonds, and treasury bills. Understanding their investment behavior and the magnitude of their contribution to capital market deepening is important for regulators and policymakers seeking to mobilize long-term domestic capital. This study employs a secondary data approach using published financial statements of all insurance companies quoted on the NGX from 2019 to 2023. Variables of interest include total invested assets, allocation to capital market instruments, equity portfolio performance, and compliance with NAICOM's asset management guidelines. Descriptive and trend analysis techniques are applied to characterize investment patterns and identify changes over the study period. Preliminary analysis suggests that insurance sector investments in equities and government securities represent a modest but growing contribution to capital market liquidity. The study also reviews regulatory investment mandates and their effect on portfolio allocation decisions. Recommendations target NAICOM and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on harmonizing insurance investment regulations with broader capital market development objectives. Keywords: Insurance Industry, Capital Market, Institutional Investment, Nigerian Exchange Group, NAICOM.
