International Marketing Strategies Adopted by Nigerian Cosmetics Firms Targeting the West African Market

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the international marketing strategies adopted by Nigerian cosmetics and personal care product firms targeting West African markets. The Nigerian beauty industry has experienced significant growth driven by rising consumer spending, growing interest in Afrocentric beauty products, and the expansion of e-commerce platforms. Several Nigerian cosmetics brands have begun exporting to neighbouring countries including Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal, and Sierra Leone. The study adopts a qualitative research design utilising in-depth interviews with 25 marketing directors and brand managers from cosmetics companies with documented West African export operations, supplemented by analysis of brand communication materials and social media marketing content. Thematic analysis is used to interpret interview data. The theoretical framework draws on the standardisation versus adaptation debate in international marketing and the Uppsala internationalisation process model. The study investigates how Nigerian cosmetics firms adapt product formulations, packaging, pricing, and promotional strategies to suit the cultural preferences, skin tone diversity, and retail distribution systems of different West African markets. It also examines the role of social media influencers and diaspora networks as marketing channels. Findings are expected to indicate that successful Nigerian cosmetics exporters blend pan-African identity appeals with localised product adaptations for specific country markets. Recommendations are provided for emerging Nigerian beauty brands on developing export-ready product lines and digital marketing strategies for intra-African market expansion.
