Organisational Learning and Supply Chain Innovation in Nigerian Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Firms: An Empirical Examination

This study empirically examines the relationship between organisational learning and supply chain innovation in Nigerian pharmaceutical manufacturing firms, with data drawn from firms in Lagos, Ogun, and Cross River States. Supply chain innovation, encompassing new logistics processes, novel supplier engagement models, and digital procurement solutions, is critical for pharmaceutical firms seeking to reduce production costs, improve distribution coverage, and navigate Nigeria's complex regulatory environment. Organisational learning is theorised as an antecedent of innovation capacity, enabling firms to translate market intelligence, operational experience, and external knowledge into supply chain improvements. Using a quantitative design, structured questionnaires were administered to 120 supply chain directors, research and development officers, and operations managers in 24 pharmaceutical manufacturers. Organisational learning is assessed through knowledge acquisition, knowledge sharing, knowledge interpretation, and knowledge institutionalisation dimensions. Supply chain innovation is operationalised through process innovation frequency, supplier development novelty, and digital adoption rate. The study employs structural equation modelling with the dynamic capabilities framework as theoretical grounding. Findings are expected to confirm that knowledge sharing and knowledge institutionalisation are the strongest predictors of supply chain innovation, with implications for how pharmaceutical firms structure internal learning systems. The study addresses a research gap on organisational learning as a driver of supply chain capability in Nigerian pharmaceutical manufacturing. Recommendations address firm management, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, and pharmaceutical industry associations on building learning organisations as a foundation for supply chain competitiveness.
