Hull corrosion constitutes one of the most persistent challenges affecting vessel operational efficiency and longevity in tropical maritime environments. This study evaluates the nature, rate, and structural consequences of hull corrosion among vessels operating in the Niger Delta region, with specific focus on the creeks and waterways of Bayelsa and Delta States. Using a descriptive case study approach, the research examines ten operational vessels belonging to oil servicing companies and local boat operators. Data collection involved visual hull inspection, review of maintenance logs, and structured interviews with marine engineers and vessel owners. The study finds that the combination of saltwater exposure, hydrocarbon contamination, and inadequate anti-corrosion coating maintenance accelerates hull degradation at rates significantly above the global average for temperate maritime zones. Many operators rely on reactive rather than preventive maintenance strategies, leading to premature structural failure and increased dry-docking costs. The research further reveals that smaller vessels operated by local fishing and transport communities receive the least maintenance attention, creating significant safety risks for passengers and crew. Recommendations emphasise the adoption of sacrificial anode systems, the use of epoxy-based hull coatings resistant to hydrocarbon environments, and the establishment of community-level maintenance awareness programmes by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency. Findings are relevant to vessel operators, port authorities, and policymakers in the South South geopolitical zone.
