Examination of Tidal Patterns and Their Influence on Vessel Operations in the Imo River Estuary

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Tidal dynamics in estuarine environments significantly influence vessel navigation, scheduling, and cargo operations, particularly in regions with marked tidal ranges. This study examines the tidal patterns in the Imo River estuary in Imo and Abia States and analyses their practical influence on vessel operations in the South East geopolitical zone. A descriptive research design was employed, utilising tidal gauge data from the Nigerian Ports Authority, interviews with fifteen experienced river pilots and vessel operators, and analysis of historical vessel movement records for the Imo River waterway. The study characterises the tidal regime in terms of range, frequency, and seasonal variation, and correlates tidal stages with documented vessel operational constraints. Findings indicate that the Imo River estuary experiences a semi-diurnal tidal regime with a mean spring tidal range of approximately one and a half metres, which is sufficient to restrict deeper-draught vessels to tidal windows of approximately four to six hours per day. During the dry season, reduced river discharge amplifies tidal penetration upstream, increasing the area affected by tidal operational constraints. The study finds that vessel operators largely manage tidal constraints through informal scheduling practices, without reference to official tide tables that are not widely distributed. Recommendations include publication and distribution of tide tables to vessel operators in the estuary, installation of tidal gauge displays at key jetties, and incorporation of tidal awareness into local maritime training programmes.
