The quality of maritime education at pre-tertiary and lower tertiary levels has significant implications for the preparedness of future Nigerian seafarers and marine engineers. This study evaluates the quality of maritime education delivery in Federal Government Colleges and polytechnics offering nautical science and marine engineering programmes in the South West geopolitical zone, specifically examining institutions in Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo States. A descriptive survey design was adopted, using structured questionnaires administered to one hundred and twenty students and thirty lecturers, combined with physical assessment of laboratory, workshop, and simulation facilities. Curriculum content was reviewed against the requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers. Findings indicate significant disparities in facility quality between institutions, with some programmes lacking functional engine simulators and navigation laboratories essential for practical competency development. Lecturer qualifications were found to be adequate in terms of academic credentials but limited in terms of recent sea-service experience, which affects the practical relevance of instruction. Student access to industrial training placements with shipping companies is identified as a persistent challenge. Recommendations include mandatory industry attachment for maritime lecturers, investment in simulation facilities under the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, and establishment of structured internship agreements between maritime institutions and shipping companies operating in South West Nigeria.
