Malaria Parasite Density and Anaemia Among Pregnant Women Attending Antenatal Care in Ibadan, Oyo State

Malaria in pregnancy remains a major contributor to maternal and neonatal morbidity in Nigeria. This study investigated the relationship between malaria parasite density and anaemia among pregnant women attending antenatal care clinics at primary and secondary health facilities in Ibadan, Oyo State, Southwest Nigeria. A cross-sectional study design was employed, enrolling 250 consenting pregnant women across all three trimesters. Peripheral blood smears were examined microscopically and parasite densities calculated per microlitre. Packed cell volume and haemoglobin levels were determined using standard laboratory methods. Demographic and obstetric histories were captured via structured questionnaires. Results showed a malaria prevalence of 29.6 percent, with primigravidous women recording significantly higher parasite densities. Anaemia prevalence was 57.2 percent overall, with a strong positive correlation observed between high parasite density and severe anaemia. Intermittent preventive treatment uptake was suboptimal, with only 38 percent of eligible women having received recommended doses. These findings support intensification of malaria prevention strategies in antenatal care settings across Southwest Nigeria, including improved insecticide-treated net distribution and adherence counselling.
