Programme Assessment of Schistosomiasis Control Activities in School Communities of Kebbi State

School-based preventive chemotherapy for schistosomiasis using praziquantel is the WHO-recommended control strategy in endemic Nigerian states, and programme assessments are critical for identifying implementation gaps. This study assessed the quality and coverage of schistosomiasis control activities in school communities of Kebbi State, Northwest Nigeria. A programme assessment framework was applied using data from state and local government programme reports, structured interviews with school health programme officers, and community spot-check surveys. A total of 24 schools across six local government areas were included. Treatment coverage data were verified against school enrolment registers. Reported school treatment coverage was 69.2 percent. Independent verification through spot-check surveys found actual coverage of 52.7 percent, with significant discrepancies in three local government areas. Praziquantel stockouts were reported in 41.7 percent of schools at the time of planned distribution. Teacher training on drug administration was conducted in only 58.3 percent of assessed schools. The study identifies systemic gaps in praziquantel supply chain management, teacher capacity, and monitoring data reliability. It recommends deployment of community drug distributors as supplementary delivery agents and adoption of independent coverage verification surveys in Kebbi State's control programme.
