📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
The Warri River in Delta State, South South Nigeria, receives considerable volumes of industrial effluents from petroleum refineries, petrochemical complexes, and steel manufacturing facilities located within the Warri industrial corridor. This study assesses the pollution load entering the Warri River from three major industrial discharge points, quantifying concentrations of heavy metals (lead, cadmium, chromium, zinc, mercury), total petroleum hydrocarbons, biochemical oxygen demand, and suspended solids. Effluent and river water samples are collected monthly for twelve months during 2023 to 2024 at both upstream and downstream sampling stations. Laboratory analyses follow standard methods prescribed by the American Public Health Association. Pollution load calculations incorporate discharge flow rates obtained from facility records and field measurements to derive mass loading estimates per pollutant. Results are evaluated against National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency guidelines and compared with international benchmarks. The study employs a pollution index to rank the severity of contamination at each discharge point and downstream receptor sites. Findings are expected to demonstrate exceedances of permissible limits for petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals at all industrial discharge stations. Recommendations address the need for mandatory effluent pre-treatment systems, real-time monitoring technologies, and stronger enforcement mechanisms by regulatory authorities.
