Community Sports Development and Its Socioeconomic Impact in Rural Communities in Kebbi State

Community sports development initiatives in rural Nigeria serve multiple functions beyond physical recreation, including social cohesion, youth engagement, economic opportunity creation, and public health improvement. This study examines the socioeconomic impact of community sports development programmes in rural communities in Kebbi State, North West Nigeria. A mixed-methods design was adopted, with community sports leaders, local government sports officers, and community members participating in structured questionnaires and focus group discussions across eight rural communities. Socioeconomic impact was assessed across dimensions including youth employment through sports-related activities, community health outcomes, social integration of marginalised groups, community infrastructure development, and reduction in youth antisocial behaviour. Findings indicate that communities with active sports development programmes report significantly lower rates of youth involvement in criminal activities and higher social cohesion scores compared to communities without structured sports programmes. Economic benefits are modest but meaningful, with sports events generating petty trading income for women in six of eight communities. Community health outcomes are improved through sports-linked health education sessions conducted by programme coordinators. However, sustainability is a critical challenge, with 62 percent of programmes reporting funding gaps that periodically suspend activities. Recommendations include formalising community sports development funding through the state sports commission, training community sports leaders in programme management, and linking community sports initiatives to national youth employment frameworks.
