Glucose Tolerance and Insulin Resistance Markers Among Obese Adults in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory, North Central Nigeria

Background: Obesity-linked type 2 diabetes mellitus is escalating in urban Nigeria, with the Federal Capital Territory presenting particularly high rates due to sedentary urban lifestyles and calorie-dense dietary shifts. Identifying insulin resistance markers at the pre-diabetic stage can enable timely intervention. Undergraduate-level research in this domain can build foundational epidemiological data. Objectives: This study seeks to evaluate fasting blood glucose, two-hour post-load glucose, and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance scores among obese adults attending a tertiary health facility in Abuja. Methods: One hundred obese adults (body mass index above 30) and fifty normal-weight controls will be recruited. Fasting and two-hour post-oral glucose tolerance test blood samples will be collected. Fasting serum insulin will be measured, and insulin resistance computed. Questionnaires will capture dietary patterns, physical activity, and family history. SPSS will be used for analysis. Expected Outcomes: Obese participants are expected to show significantly higher glucose intolerance and insulin resistance scores, with waist-to-hip ratio emerging as the strongest predictor. Conclusion: Outcomes will provide evidence for early metabolic screening in obese urban Nigerians and inform diabetes prevention strategies.
