Survey of Arabic Language Graduates’ Employment Outcomes in the Labour Market: Evidence from Plateau State

Graduates of Arabic language and Islamic studies programmes in Nigerian universities face persistent questions about the employability of their qualifications in a labour market that overwhelmingly privileges English-medium professional credentials. This study surveys the employment outcomes of Arabic language graduates in Plateau State, examining the sectors of employment, alignment between academic training and job requirements, and the strategies graduates deploy to leverage Arabic competence in diverse occupational contexts. Using a cross-sectional survey design, the research administers structured questionnaires to 150 Arabic language graduates who completed their studies between 2018 and 2023, drawn from a combination of institutional alumni records and professional network referrals. In-depth interviews with 20 employers in education, Islamic finance, NGO, and public administration sectors provide demand-side perspectives. The study finds that the majority of respondents are employed in teaching and Islamic education administration, with a smaller proportion working in Islamic banking, translation services, and international development organisations. Graduate underemployment is documented in approximately 30 percent of cases, with respondents citing insufficient English proficiency, absence of digital skills, and limited career guidance as major obstacles. Recommendations address curriculum reform to incorporate vocational Arabic competencies and digital skills training.
