Background: Artisans, including welders, carpenters, tailors, and mechanics, are occupationally exposed to musculoskeletal strain, noise, and chemical agents, leading to frequent pain-related complaints. Their tendency to use non-prescription medicines for pain management without medical supervision poses significant safety risks. This study investigated non-prescription pain medicine use among artisans in Aba, Abia State. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among 310 artisans in three major trade clusters in Aba metropolis. Data were collected on pain frequency, drug types used, dosing practices, combination use, and awareness of side effects. Results: Non-prescription analgesic use was reported by 79 percent of respondents, with paracetamol and diclofenac being most common. Excessive dosing (above recommended limits) was acknowledged by 38 percent of users. Concurrent use of two or more analgesics was reported by 24 percent. Side effect awareness was low, with only 31 percent knowledgeable about NSAIDs and gastrointestinal risks. Conclusion: Non-prescription analgesic use among Aba artisans is high and poorly regulated at the individual level. Targeted workplace health programmes and accessible occupational health services are needed to mitigate associated risks.
