Effect of Teacher Motivation on the Quality of Social Studies Instruction in Secondary Schools in Bauchi State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the relationship between teacher motivation and the quality of Social Studies instruction in secondary schools in Bauchi State, North East Nigeria. Teacher motivation is a significant determinant of instructional quality, encompassing enthusiasm, commitment to lesson preparation, and responsiveness to student needs. In Bauchi State, irregular salary payment, lack of promotion opportunities, and poor working conditions have been cited as demotivating factors affecting teacher effectiveness. Using a descriptive survey design, 80 Social Studies teachers from 30 schools in Bauchi Local Government Area were surveyed using a teacher motivation scale and an instructional quality observation checklist. Data were analysed using Pearson correlation and regression analysis. Findings reveal a significant positive correlation between teacher motivation levels and observer ratings of instructional quality in Social Studies classrooms. Motivated teachers used more varied instructional methods, provided timely feedback, and demonstrated greater curriculum coverage. The study recommends that the Bauchi State government prioritise teacher welfare through prompt salary payment, transparent promotion processes, and provision of non-monetary incentives such as professional development opportunities. School principals are encouraged to foster supportive school climates that recognise teacher contributions. Keywords: teacher motivation, instructional quality, Social Studies, Bauchi State, secondary education.
