Discourse Markers in Nigerian Political Speeches: A Study of Selected Gubernatorial Addresses in Rivers State

Discourse markers serve critical cohesive and interactive functions in political speech, guiding audience interpretation, managing information flow, and constructing rhetorical authority. This study examines the use of discourse markers in selected gubernatorial speeches delivered in Rivers State between 2020 and 2024, with the aim of identifying the most frequently used markers and describing their pragmatic functions in the political discourse context. A corpus of ten publicly available gubernatorial speeches was compiled and subjected to qualitative discourse analysis using a framework adapted from recent pragmatics and political discourse literature. Discourse markers were identified and categorized into elaboration markers, contrast markers, causality markers, and interactional markers. Results show that elaboration markers such as furthermore and in addition are the most frequently deployed category, consistent with the persuasive goal of accumulating evidence for policy achievement claims. Contrastive markers including however and on the contrary appear frequently in speeches addressing opposition criticism, functioning to reframe negative assessments. Interactional markers including you know and let me tell you appear in informal asides designed to create intimacy with audience members. The study identifies a pattern of marker clustering at the openings and closings of speech sections, suggesting a deliberate rhetorical strategy of audience orientation at transition points. Recommendations for political speech analysts and communications advisers in Nigerian government contexts are offered.
