📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
The rapid integration of artificial intelligence and chatbot technologies into global newsrooms has raised fundamental questions about the future of journalism, particularly in developing media environments. This study examined the impact of AI and chatbots on news delivery and audience engagement in Nigerian media. The study was anchored on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) proposed by Davis, which explains how users come to accept and use technology based on perceived usefulness and ease of use. A descriptive survey design was adopted, targeting journalists, editors, and digital media audiences across selected Nigerian media organisations. A sample of 150 respondents was drawn using purposive and random sampling techniques, and a structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Findings revealed that AI-powered tools have enhanced the speed and volume of news delivery in Nigerian media, though concerns about accuracy, job displacement, and editorial integrity remain significant. Audience engagement metrics showed improvement in interactivity, but critical segments of the audience expressed distrust toward AI-generated content. The study concluded that while AI and chatbots offer considerable advantages for news production efficiency and audience reach, their adoption in Nigerian media must be carefully governed by editorial standards. It was recommended that Nigerian media organisations develop clear AI usage policies, invest in journalist training on AI tools, and prioritise transparency with audiences regarding the use of automated content systems.
