📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Community radio remains one of the most viable instruments for rural development communication in Nigeria, given the limited reach of internet connectivity and the cultural resonance of oral communication traditions in rural Igbo-speaking communities. This study examined radio listening patterns in selected rural communities in Enugu State and their implications for the effectiveness of development communication programmes. The study was anchored on the Diffusion of Innovations Theory, which posits that the adoption of new ideas, technologies, and behaviours in communities is facilitated by accessible and trusted communication channels including local radio. A survey research design was employed, targeting a population of 2,400 adult residents across four rural communities in Enugu State selected through purposive sampling. A sample of 331 respondents was drawn using simple random sampling, and structured interviews in Igbo and English served as the primary data collection instrument. Findings revealed that community radio was the most trusted and regularly consumed information source among rural respondents, with agricultural updates, health advisories, and market information identified as the most valued content categories. Inconsistent broadcast schedules, limited local language programming, and poor signal coverage in remote areas were the most cited barriers to optimal listenership. The study concluded that community radio retains significant potential as a rural development communication vehicle in Enugu State but requires strategic investment in content localisation and infrastructure. It was recommended that the Enugu State Broadcasting Service expand community-level programming and collaborate with local government councils on development communication initiatives.
