Journalists’ Safety and Press Freedom in Anambra State: Challenges and Prospects in the Context of Insecurity

The deteriorating security situation in Southeast Nigeria has introduced new and urgent dimensions to press freedom challenges in the region, with journalists in Anambra State increasingly operating under conditions of physical threat, intimidation, and self-censorship that compromise their capacity to fulfil the watchdog function of the press. This study examined the safety challenges facing journalists in Anambra State and assessed the broader implications for press freedom and democratic communication. The study was anchored on the Political Economy of Media Theory, which connects structural economic and political conditions to media freedom outcomes, and on normative frameworks that recognise press freedom as a democratic prerequisite. A qualitative design was adopted, utilising semi-structured in-depth interviews with 24 purposively selected working journalists across print, broadcast, and online platforms in Anambra State. Thematic analysis was employed to identify dominant safety concerns, institutional responses, and coping strategies. Findings revealed that physical threats from both state and non-state actors, economic pressures from media owners, and institutional abandonment by employers were the three most cited threats to journalist safety. Self-censorship was identified as the most prevalent adaptive response, with 19 of 24 respondents reporting that they had declined to publish or broadcast safety-sensitive stories in the past 12 months. Formal institutional support mechanisms for journalist safety were largely absent. The study concluded that press freedom in Anambra State is severely constrained by multifaceted safety threats with significant chilling effects on investigative and conflict reporting. It was recommended that the Nigerian Union of Journalists develop a regional safety support protocol and that government security agencies provide explicit protection commitments to media practitioners.
