📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Academic timetable management in Nigerian polytechnics is frequently characterised by scheduling conflicts, last-minute adjustments, poor communication of changes to students, and inefficient use of available lecture halls. These problems are common across polytechnic departments in Enugu State, where timetable construction remains largely manual and heavily dependent on individual departmental officers. This study developed a digital timetable management system designed to automate scheduling processes for polytechnic departments in Enugu, using the Department of Computer Science at IMT Enugu as a case study. The system was implemented using PHP, MySQL, and a JavaScript front-end framework, incorporating constraint-based scheduling logic to automatically detect and resolve clashes in lecturer assignments, venue bookings, and course time slots. Departmental officers were provided with an administrative dashboard for course entry, lecturer assignment, and timetable publication, while students and lecturers accessed published timetables through a read-only interface with real-time update notifications. Testing confirmed that the scheduling engine successfully eliminated all detected conflicts across a simulated semester dataset involving 30 courses and 15 lecturers. Staff feedback indicated significant reductions in time spent on manual scheduling and fewer student complaints regarding timetable errors. The study concluded that digital timetable management systems represent an effective and necessary upgrade for polytechnic academic administration in Enugu State, with broad replication potential across other departments and institutions.
