📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
The sedentary, high-stress occupational environments of Nigerian corporate workplaces represent a significant context for cardiovascular disease risk accumulation, and structured biochemical risk profiling programmes can identify at-risk employees for early intervention. This study performs comprehensive biochemical cardiovascular risk profiling in employees of a major telecommunications company operating in Lagos. Four hundred and twelve employees across junior, middle, and senior management grades participated in a voluntary occupational health screening programme. Fasting blood samples were collected and analysed for total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C, triglycerides, fasting glucose, HbA1c, high-sensitivity CRP, homocysteine, lipoprotein(a), and fibrinogen. Blood pressure, body mass index, and waist circumference were measured. The Framingham risk score was calculated for all eligible participants. Biochemical risk profiling identified dyslipidaemia in 48 percent of employees, with LDL-C above optimal levels in 41 percent. Impaired fasting glucose or prediabetes was detected in 22 percent, with undiagnosed type 2 diabetes in 8 percent. Elevated high-sensitivity CRP indicating high cardiovascular risk was present in 31 percent. Elevated lipoprotein(a) was found in 18 percent, representing a frequently overlooked heritable risk factor. Framingham ten-year cardiovascular risk above 10 percent was present in 26 percent of participants over forty years. Senior management employees showed the highest prevalence of multiple concurrent biochemical risk factors, reflecting stress-related metabolic burden. The study recommends an employer-funded cardiovascular prevention programme incorporating dietary intervention, physical activity support, and statin prescribing pathway facilitation.
