Architectural Agency and Social Change: A Critical Theory of Participatory Architecture in Nigeria

Participatory architecture, in which communities are active co-designers of their built environments rather than passive recipients of professional design decisions, has been theorised as a mechanism for social empowerment and spatial justice, yet its actual practice in the Nigerian context rarely matches its theoretical ambition, and the gap between participatory discourse and participatory practice in Nigerian architecture demands critical theoretical investigation. This dissertation develops an original critical theory of architectural agency in participatory design practice in Nigeria, challenging both the naïve optimism of mainstream participation theory and the cynical dismissal of participation as meaningless consultation. The theoretical development proceeds through three stages: a genealogy of participatory architecture discourse in Nigeria tracing its origins from colonial welfare housing consultation through post-independence self-help housing theory to contemporary slum upgrading NGO practice; a critical empirical investigation of six participatory design projects in Lagos, Kano, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Kaduna, and Maiduguri across different institutional contexts including government, NGO, and practitioner-initiated projects; and a theory construction stage synthesising empirical findings into an original critical participatory architecture theory. The theory's original contributions include a structural agency model distinguishing the conditions under which participatory design generates transformative social outcomes from conditions producing tokenistic or co-optive participation, a Nigerian participation topology mapping the diversity of participatory forms encountered in practice, and a reflexive practitioner ethics framework that addresses the professional power dynamics inherent in architecture-community relationships. The dissertation contributes to participation theory, architectural ethics, and social housing scholarship.
