Complexity Theory and the Design of Adaptive Urban Environments in Nigerian Metropolitan Contexts

Nigerian metropolitan environments exhibit the characteristics of complex adaptive systems, including emergent spatial order, non-linear change responses, unpredictable self-organisation, and path-dependent development trajectories that conventional planning and architectural theories are structurally ill-equipped to engage with. This dissertation applies complexity theory as an original theoretical lens for understanding and designing adaptive urban environments in Nigerian metropolitan contexts, making contributions to both complexity urbanism theory and Nigerian urban design practice. The theoretical contribution develops an original complexity-informed urban design framework that reconceptualises urban design not as the imposition of intended spatial order but as the cultivation of conditions for adaptive spatial emergence. Original theoretical components include a morphogenetic rule identification methodology for extracting the generative rules underlying observed emergent spatial order in Nigerian informal urban morphologies, an adaptive design parameter theory specifying which design decisions must be fixed and which should remain open for community adaptation in different Nigerian urban typologies, and a resilient urbanism threshold theory identifying minimum spatial provision thresholds below which adaptive self-organisation fails to maintain acceptable urban quality. The empirical programme generates morphogenetic rule sets for three Nigerian urban morphology types through detailed spatial analysis in Lagos Mainland, Kano Old City, and Onitsha. Design experiments applying the theoretical framework to urban intensification projects in each case city demonstrate substantially improved adaptive capacity compared to conventional master plan alternatives. The dissertation contributes to complexity urbanism theory and proposes a new design practice orientation for Nigerian urban designers.
