Spatial Intelligence, Cultural Continuity, and the Ibibio Built Environment: An Architectural Theory of Place-Making in South South Nigeria

The Ibibio built environment in Akwa Ibom State represents one of the least theorised yet most architecturally distinctive regional traditions in Nigeria, characterised by a sophisticated system of spatial intelligence that integrates cosmological values, social organisation, ecological adaptation, and material practice in ways that have been significantly disrupted but not entirely extinguished by modernisation and urban development pressures. This dissertation develops an original architectural theory of place-making grounded in Ibibio spatial intelligence, contributing to both regional architectural historiography and broader theoretical debates in phenomenology of place, indigenous knowledge systems, and decolonial architectural theory. The theoretical development employs a grounded theory methodology combining extended ethnographic fieldwork in six Ibibio communities in Etinan, Itu, Uyo, Ikono, Ika, and Abak LGAs, architectural documentation of traditional settlement forms and spatial structures, oral history interviews with sixty custodians of Ibibio spatial and building knowledge, and phenomenological analysis of spatial experience through structured walking and dwelling research methods. Three original theoretical propositions emerge: a cosmological space-time matrix theory identifying how Ibibio cosmology structures the spatial organisation of compounds, settlements, and sacred landscapes; a relational material agency theory examining the social and spiritual significance attributed to construction materials and processes in Ibibio building practice; and a spatial literacy theory analysing the embodied spatial knowledge transmitted through apprenticeship relationships in traditional Ibibio building. The dissertation situates these propositions within a broader architectural theory of African place-making that challenges universalist phenomenology.
