📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study examined gender differences in academic achievement in Business Education among students in junior secondary schools in Abia State, South East Nigeria. Gender equity in education is a critical dimension of the Sustainable Development Goals, and understanding how gender influences learning outcomes in specific subject areas helps educators design more inclusive instructional approaches. Business Education at the junior secondary level lays the foundational concepts of commerce and entrepreneurship for all students, making the identification of gender-based achievement gaps especially important. A causal-comparative research design was adopted. The population comprised 1,400 JSS3 Business Studies students in public junior secondary schools across three local government areas in Abia State. A sample of 280 students, equally distributed by gender, was selected through stratified random sampling. An achievement test based on the Business Studies curriculum and validated by measurement experts was used as the data collection instrument. Independent samples t-test was used to test the null hypothesis at a 0.05 significance level. Findings reveal a significant gender difference in academic achievement, with female students outperforming male students across most Business Studies topics, particularly in business communication and record keeping. The study recommends that male student engagement strategies, including competitive commercial simulations and industry field trips, should be incorporated into Business Studies instruction to close the gender achievement gap in Abia State.
