📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study investigated the management challenges and prospects of Business Education departments in Nigerian universities in the North Central geopolitical zone. Effective departmental management is a fundamental determinant of programme quality, academic output, and graduate employability. In the North Central zone, which hosts several federal and state universities, the management of Business Education departments is shaped by a unique set of institutional, financial, and human resource dynamics. This study adopted a descriptive survey design. The population comprised 120 academic staff and heads of Business Education departments in five universities across Benue, Kogi, Niger, and Plateau States. The entire accessible population was used, supplemented by purposive selection of senior administrative officers. Validated questionnaires and in-depth interview guides were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and thematic content analysis for qualitative responses. Findings reveal that the major management challenges include inadequate funding, staff shortage, curriculum rigidity, poor physical infrastructure, and weak industry linkages. Prospects identified include increasing student enrollment, strong graduate demand from the labour market, and government interest in vocational education reform. The study recommends that university management in North Central states should adopt strategic planning frameworks for Business Education departments, explore public-private partnerships for resource development, and engage alumni networks for departmental capacity building.
