Assessment of Entrepreneurship Programme Delivery in Tertiary Institutions in Kogi State: A Focus on Business Education Departments

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study assessed the delivery of entrepreneurship programmes in Business Education departments of tertiary institutions in Kogi State, North Central Nigeria. Entrepreneurship education has been identified by the Federal Government as a critical instrument for addressing youth unemployment and stimulating economic diversification. Despite its formal inclusion in tertiary education curricula, significant gaps in programme delivery quality and impact remain across many institutions. Kogi State, as a major educational hub in the North Central zone, provides a relevant context for this assessment. A descriptive survey design was adopted. The population comprised 180 Business Education students enrolled in entrepreneurship courses and 30 lecturers teaching the courses in four tertiary institutions in Kogi State. Using stratified sampling, 90 students and all 30 lecturers were selected. Separate validated questionnaires for students and lecturers were used for data collection. Mean, standard deviation, and independent samples t-test were employed for analysis. Findings reveal significant gaps between intended and actual programme outcomes, with inadequate practical components, poor business incubation support, and assessment practices that prioritize memorization over innovation cited as the dominant challenges. The study recommends that the Kogi State Ministry of Education should standardize entrepreneurship programme delivery requirements and link programme outcomes to a state-level business incubation fund for students who demonstrate viable business ideas.
