Analysis of Green Business Education and Environmental Sustainability Awareness Among University Students in Kano State

This study analyzed the relationship between green business education content and environmental sustainability awareness among Business Education students in universities in Kano State, North West Nigeria. Green business education integrates environmental sustainability principles into business teaching, equipping students with the knowledge and values needed to pursue environmentally responsible professional practices. Despite global momentum toward sustainability education, the extent to which Business Education programmes in Kano State address green business concepts remains largely unexamined. Grounded in the Environmental Education Theory and the Stakeholder Theory of Corporate Sustainability, a cross-sectional survey design was adopted. The population comprised 640 undergraduate Business Education students across two universities in Kano State. A stratified sample of 320 students was selected. A validated Green Business Education Content Scale and Environmental Sustainability Awareness Inventory were used for data collection. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression were employed for analysis. Findings reveal a significant positive relationship between exposure to green business education content and environmental sustainability awareness, with renewable energy business modules and corporate social responsibility topics having the strongest associations. Less than 20 percent of students reported substantial exposure to green business content in their formal curriculum. The study contributes empirical evidence for green curriculum integration in Business Education and recommends that the National Universities Commission mandate the inclusion of sustainability modules in all Business Education curricula across Nigerian universities.
