Survey of Ornamental Fish Trade and Marketing in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory

The ornamental fish trade is a rapidly growing segment of the Nigerian aquaculture industry, driven by increasing disposable incomes, urbanisation, and the expanding interior design culture in major cities. This study surveys the ornamental fish trade, species composition, pricing, supply chains, and trader demographics in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Structured interviews were conducted with 60 ornamental fish traders at five major pet shops and outdoor market locations in Abuja Municipal Area Council. Data collected covered species stocked, sourcing patterns, monthly turnover, pricing, consumer preferences, and major constraints. Results documented 48 ornamental fish species in trade, with goldfish (Carassius auratus), guppies (Poecilia reticulata), and African cichlids as the most commonly traded species. Over 70% of species were sourced from Lagos-based importers, with very few species produced locally. Monthly turnover per trader ranged from 45,000 to 280,000 Naira. Consumer preference surveys revealed a strong preference for brightly coloured freshwater species, with 62% of buyers being first-time aquarium owners. High mortality during transport was cited by 78% of traders as a major loss source. The study identifies a significant market opportunity for domestic ornamental fish production to reduce import dependence and recommends the establishment of ornamental fish breeding enterprises as a viable agribusiness niche for young entrepreneurs in the FCT under the National Agricultural Technology and Innovation Policy.
