Assessment of Electronic Banking and Revenue Generation in Access Bank Nigeria, Ibadan, Oyo State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Electronic banking has fundamentally altered the revenue structure of commercial banks in Nigeria, shifting income from traditional branch-based transactions to digital fee-generating channels. This study assesses the relationship between electronic banking adoption and revenue generation in Access Bank Nigeria branches in Ibadan, Oyo State, South West Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a sample of 240 customers and 45 branch banking officers from four Access Bank branches in Ibadan North and Ibadan South West Local Government Areas. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and branch revenue records for the period 2019 to 2022. Electronic banking adoption was measured by mobile banking usage rate, internet banking transaction volume, and USSD transaction frequency. Revenue generation was measured by non-interest income, transaction fee revenue, and overall branch profitability. Pearson correlation and simple linear regression analysis were employed. Results showed a strong positive correlation between electronic banking transaction volume and non-interest income (r = 0.74, p < 0.01). USSD transaction frequency was the strongest predictor of transaction fee revenue among low-income customer segments. The study concludes that electronic banking adoption significantly drives non-interest revenue growth in Access Bank Ibadan branches, with USSD services constituting the most inclusive digital revenue channel. Recommendations include targeted USSD financial literacy campaigns and the introduction of tiered fee structures to encourage broader digital adoption across all customer income segments. Keywords: electronic banking, revenue generation, Access Bank Nigeria, Ibadan, non-interest income
