Empirical Analysis of Vegetation Recovery Trajectories Following Oil Spill Remediation in the Niger Delta Using Permanent Plot Monitoring

Understanding the trajectory and speed of vegetation recovery following oil spill remediation is a critical knowledge gap in Niger Delta ecology, with direct implications for remediation standards, regulatory compliance, and ecosystem restoration policy. This study empirically analysed vegetation recovery trajectories over a 5-year period at six remediated oil spill sites in Rivers and Bayelsa States, using permanent vegetation monitoring plots established within 3 months of remediation completion. Vegetation surveys were conducted at 6-month intervals, recording species composition, cover, diversity (Shannon-Wiener and Simpson indices), above-ground biomass, and soil hydrocarbon concentration at each survey. Paired uncontaminated reference plots adjacent to each site were concurrently monitored. Multivariate trajectory analysis using non-metric multidimensional scaling and permutational MANOVA was used to assess recovery trajectories. Recovery speed index and community similarity to reference plots were calculated at each time point. Results showed that surface vegetation cover recovered to 70% of reference levels within 18 months at all sites, but species composition remained significantly dissimilar from reference communities throughout the 5-year monitoring period (PERMANOVA, F = 8.34, p < 0.001). Pioneer-dominated communities persisted at 5 sites, with late-successional species showing very limited recruitment. Soil hydrocarbon concentrations correlated negatively with species richness recovery even where concentrations were below NOSDRA threshold limits. The study concludes that current remediation standards in Nigeria are insufficient to guarantee full botanical recovery and recommends mandatory extended ecological monitoring of at least 7 years post-remediation, accompanied by assisted planting of late-successional species.
