Analytical Study of Strategic Alliance Formation and Performance Outcomes in Nigerian Telecommunications Industry

Strategic alliances are central to value creation in Nigeria's telecommunications industry, where infrastructure sharing, content partnerships, and fintech collaborations are proliferating, yet analytical study of their formation determinants and performance outcomes is limited. This study analytically investigated the determinants of strategic alliance formation and the performance outcomes of 35 documented alliances involving MTN, Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile between 2018 and 2023. Alliance categories covered infrastructure sharing, roaming agreements, fintech partnerships, and content provider arrangements. Alliance performance was measured by revenue contribution, market penetration enhancement, cost savings realised, and alliance sustainability duration. Transaction cost economics and resource-based view frameworks were used to analyse formation determinants. Data were collected through structured interviews with 40 alliance and strategy managers, supplemented by financial data from published reports. Multiple regression and comparative case analysis were employed. Results showed that resource complementarity was the strongest determinant of alliance performance (beta = 0.52, p < 0.001), while prior relationship history reduced transaction costs and improved performance outcomes (beta = 0.38, p < 0.01). Fintech alliances showed the highest revenue contribution per alliance, averaging 18.4% incremental revenue over 3-year periods. Alliance governance structure significantly moderated the relationship between resource complementarity and performance (F = 7.32, p < 0.01). The study concludes that complementary capabilities and clear governance are the most critical alliance design factors in Nigerian telecommunications and recommends formalised alliance management offices within telecom strategic planning functions.
