An Original Theory of Asymmetric Cultural Learning in Sino-Nigerian Educational Exchange

Educational exchange between China and Nigeria is structurally asymmetric, with far larger numbers of Nigerian students studying in China than Chinese students studying in Nigeria, and with Chinese cultural and linguistic content being introduced into Nigerian schools without equivalent Nigerian content in Chinese institutions. This study develops an original theory of asymmetric cultural learning in Sino-Nigerian educational exchange, examining the implications of this asymmetry for cultural identity, national agency, and bilateral relations. The theoretical development employs a constructivist methodology combining cultural reproduction theory, Bourdieu's capital and field theory, and postcolonial education theory. An original mixed-methods dataset was constructed through longitudinal surveys of 300 Nigerian students who studied in China at two time points (departure and two years post-return), 200 Nigerian secondary students in Mandarin pilot schools, and 30 Nigerian educators at Chinese language teaching institutions, supplemented by interviews with thirty senior Chinese and Nigerian educational officials. The Asymmetric Cultural Learning Theory developed identifies three mechanisms by which asymmetric educational exchange reproduces cultural hierarchy: linguistic loading (the exclusive requirement of Mandarin rather than reciprocal indigenous language learning), curriculum framing (the exclusive centring of Chinese cultural content in exchange programming), and credential gatekeeping (Chinese institutions' control over qualification recognition). The theory generates testable propositions and provides an original analytical contribution to the growing literature on educational dimensions of China-Africa relations.
