The Influence of Pentecostalism on the Economic Behaviour of Members in Kano State

Pentecostalism has spread significantly into predominantly Muslim northern Nigerian states, including Kano State in the North West, where Christian minority communities maintain active churches in the face of occasional social and religious tensions. This study examines the influence of Pentecostal theology, particularly prosperity gospel teachings, on the economic behaviour, savings practices, and entrepreneurial decisions of church members in Kano State. A descriptive survey design was adopted, with questionnaires administered to 150 Pentecostal church members from four churches in Kano metropolis, supplemented by interviews with six pastors and eight business owners who are church members. Findings indicate that 68 percent of respondents credit faith-based motivation derived from prosperity gospel sermons as a significant driver of their entrepreneurial initiative. However, tithe and offering expectations absorb a mean of 23 percent of household income among surveyed members, reducing available capital for business investment. Members in higher-income brackets report net positive economic outcomes from church participation, while lower-income members are more likely to report financial strain from giving obligations. Critical reflection on prosperity theology is low among respondents. The study concludes that Pentecostalism in Kano State produces mixed economic outcomes for members, with motivational benefits partially offset by financial demands. It recommends that churches integrate biblically grounded financial literacy teaching that equips members for sustainable economic management alongside faith development.
