The Impact of Christian Music on Worship Experience in Pentecostal Churches in Enugu State

Contemporary Christian music and worship leading practices have become central to the Pentecostal worship experience in Nigerian churches, yet the theological depth and spiritual formation impact of these musical forms deserve critical examination. This study examines the relationship between Christian music styles, lyrical content, and worship experience quality among congregation members in Pentecostal churches in Enugu State, South East Nigeria. A descriptive correlational design was adopted, with questionnaires administered to 200 regular worshippers from five Pentecostal churches in Enugu metropolis. Worship experience was assessed across dimensions of transcendence, theological engagement, emotional authenticity, and post-worship behavioural change. Musical preference and theological depth of lyrics were assessed through an adapted worship quality instrument. Results indicate that worship music with doctrinally rich lyrics produces stronger theological engagement scores but lower immediate emotional satisfaction ratings than high-energy contemporary music. A significant minority of respondents (37 percent) report feeling spiritually unfed by music-led worship that prioritises emotional atmosphere over theological content. Younger worshippers prefer contemporary styles but also show stronger desire for theological depth when given a choice. The study concludes that Christian music in Enugu Pentecostal churches requires a theological and aesthetic balance that provides both emotional engagement and doctrinal formation. Recommendations include developing worship leading training programmes that integrate biblical theology with contemporary musical styles.
