The Influence of Overseas Missionary Work on Local Christian Communities in Kebbi State

Kebbi State in North West Nigeria, like other predominantly Muslim states in the north, has been a target of domestic and international Christian missionary activity, with overseas missionaries contributing to church establishment, education, and healthcare in the region. This study examines the influence of overseas missionary work on local Christian communities in Kebbi State, assessing contributions to church growth, community development, and the development of indigenous leadership. A descriptive case study design was adopted, examining four mission-established churches in Birnin Kebbi, Argungu, and Yauri, drawing on interviews with fifteen long-term community members, eight indigenous church leaders, and four overseas missionaries. Documentary analysis of mission records from 2000 to 2023 was also conducted. Findings indicate that overseas missionary involvement has been catalytic for establishing churches and schools in Kebbi State, with three of four surveyed communities identifying mission-funded schools as their first access to education. However, dependency on overseas funding creates fragility in local church sustainability. Indigenous leadership development has accelerated in churches that deliberately pursued transition strategies. Cultural sensitivity is identified as a significant missionary competency gap by local informants. The study concludes that overseas missionary work in Kebbi State has produced important developmental and spiritual fruits but requires intentional transition to indigenous leadership ownership. It recommends a structured mission transition framework incorporating indigenous theologians and community elders.
