The Theology of Grace and Its Influence on Pastoral Care in Evangelical Churches in Oyo State

A robust theology of grace is central to evangelical Protestant faith, yet its practical implications for pastoral care, specifically how pastors relate to struggling, failing, or marginalised congregation members, can vary dramatically based on theological emphasis. This study examines how a theology of grace shapes pastoral care practice in selected evangelical churches in Oyo State, South West Nigeria. A qualitative descriptive design was adopted, with semi-structured interviews conducted with fifteen evangelical pastors from Baptist, ECWA, and Church of Nigeria Anglican communion in Ibadan, Ogbomosho, and Iseyin, alongside focus groups with 30 church members who had received pastoral counselling. Findings reveal that pastors with a deeply internalised grace theology tend toward non-judgmental, person-centred pastoral approaches, while those with stronger emphasis on holiness and behavioural expectations report more directive and prescriptive pastoral styles. Church members receiving grace-centred pastoral care report higher levels of trust and openness with their pastors. The study concludes that the theological orientation of pastors significantly shapes the quality and transformational impact of pastoral care, and identifies grace theology as a foundational pastoral formation priority. It recommends that evangelical theological colleges in Oyo State integrate a dedicated grace theology and pastoral care module into their ministerial formation programmes.
