Professional Ministry Development for Rural Church Pastors in North East Nigeria

Rural church pastors in North East Nigeria face unique ministry challenges including poverty, security threats from insurgency, inadequate theological training, and isolation from professional development opportunities. This study develops a professional ministry development programme specifically tailored to the realities of rural church pastors in the North East geopolitical zone. A professional programme design methodology was adopted, beginning with a needs assessment survey administered to 80 rural pastors in Borno, Yobe, and Gombe States, supplemented by interviews with fifteen denominational leaders and five theological educators. Analysis of existing distance and blended learning theological education models in Sub-Saharan Africa provided comparative design insights. Findings reveal that the most pressing professional development needs of North East rural pastors include biblical literacy, trauma-informed pastoral care, community peacebuilding, and livelihood skills for self-sustaining ministry. The proposed programme addresses these through a hybrid modular system combining three face-to-face intensive residentials with ongoing digital learning through the WhatsApp Study Group model, peer mentoring clusters, and annual pastoral review. Livelihood integration modules are distinctive to the North East context. Expert validation by denominational leaders and theological educators confirms the programme's feasibility and contextual appropriateness. The study recommends adoption of the programme by the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) North East District and other denominations with significant rural church presence.
