A Complex Adaptive Systems Analysis of Church Growth in Urban Nigeria: Theoretical Framework and Application

Church growth in Nigerian urban contexts involves non-linear dynamics, emergent properties, and systemic interdependencies that conventional church growth theory, grounded in linear organisational development models, inadequately captures. This study applies complex adaptive systems (CAS) theory to church growth in Nigerian urban contexts, developing an original CAS-informed theoretical framework for understanding and facilitating church growth. A multi-method design integrating complex adaptive systems theory, organisational sociology, and church growth ecclesiology was employed. Stage one develops the theoretical CAS-Church Growth Framework by synthesising complexity theory concepts (emergence, self-organisation, feedback loops, edge of chaos dynamics) with church growth literature and Nigerian urban church context data. Stage two applies the framework through an agent-based modelling simulation of church growth dynamics in Lagos, Kano, and Port Harcourt, calibrated with longitudinal church membership data from 50 churches over twenty years. Stage three validates the framework through structured discussions with 25 senior church growth practitioners in each of the three cities. Original theoretical contributions include the identification of five critical feedback loops in Nigerian urban church growth systems (including the leadership quality loop, theological innovation loop, and social network integration loop), an Adaptive Church Growth Strategy Framework for practitioners, and a methodology for applying complex adaptive systems analysis to ecclesiology research. The framework provides Nigerian church planters and growth strategists with a theoretically sophisticated tool for navigating the emergent and non-linear dynamics of urban church ministry.
