Developing a Theoretical Framework for the Relationship Between Pentecostalism and Democratic Governance in Nigeria

The relationship between Pentecostalism and democratic governance in Nigeria is complex, multidimensional, and theoretically underspecified. Pentecostal Christianity is simultaneously Nigeria's fastest-growing religious movement and one of its most politically influential institutions, yet the theoretical framework for understanding how Pentecostal theology shapes democratic culture, political participation, and governance ethics is underdeveloped. This study develops an original theoretical framework for the relationship between Pentecostalism and democratic governance in Nigeria. A multi-disciplinary theoretical construction methodology integrates Pentecostal ecclesiology, democratic theory, Nigerian political sociology, and empirical political science. The theoretical framework is constructed through four stages: systematic literature review of 120 published studies on Pentecostalism and politics in Africa; empirical research through surveys of 500 Nigerian Pentecostal church members on political attitudes and governance ethics, combined with 30 elite interviews with Pentecostal leaders on church-state engagement; theoretical modelling using grounded theory analysis of the empirical data; and normative theological construction drawing on biblical political theology. Original theoretical contributions include the Prophetic-Quietist Continuum Model explaining variation in Pentecostal political engagement patterns, a Blessing-Based Democratic Theory explaining how prosperity theology shapes political expectations and produces accountability vacuums, and the concept of ecclesial civic formation, theorising how Pentecostal congregational life shapes democratic citizenship capacities. The framework provides theoretical tools for understanding the civic implications of Nigeria's Pentecostal expansion.
