A Grounded Theory Investigation of Spiritual Formation in Nigerian House Church Communities

House church communities have emerged as significant alternative ecclesial spaces within the Nigerian Christian landscape, offering intimacy, accountability, and organic spiritual formation that many larger institutional churches fail to provide. Yet the spiritual formation dynamics of Nigerian house church communities have not been examined through rigorous qualitative research, representing a gap in African practical theology. This study employs grounded theory to investigate spiritual formation processes in Nigerian house church communities, making an original methodological and theoretical contribution to practical theology. A constructivist grounded theory methodology is employed over two years across house church communities in Lagos, Abuja, and Enugu, involving extended participant observation (150 hours), in-depth interviews with 45 house church members and leaders, and document analysis of community discipleship materials. Constant comparative analysis and theoretical sampling guide data collection to theoretical saturation. The emergent grounded theory identifies Relational Accountability as the core category of spiritual formation in Nigerian house church contexts, with four contributing properties: confessional community transparency, shared life witness, spiritual gift mutuality, and elder-mentored formation. The theory provides a substantive contribution to understanding how small community intimacy creates spiritual transformation conditions absent in megachurch contexts. The study also identifies challenges to house church formation including doctrinal drift, leader isolation, and community insularity. Original theoretical contributions include a Nigerian House Church Formation Model and a Critical Success Factor Framework for sustainable house church ministry. The grounded theory methodology and substantive findings contribute to both African ecclesiology and practical theology scholarship.
