Construction material quality control is a critical determinant of structural performance in building projects, yet its implementation in Bayelsa State, South South Nigeria, is anecdotally weak and poorly documented. This study evaluates quality control practices for concrete, reinforcing steel, and masonry materials in building projects in Bayelsa State. A descriptive survey design was adopted, with structured questionnaires administered to 60 site engineers, contractors, and project supervisors from active building projects in Yenagoa, Ogbia, and Brass LGAs. Site observations and sample testing from ten projects supplemented questionnaire data. Materials testing included concrete cube crushing, rebar tensile testing, and sandcrete block compressive strength. Results indicate that systematic material testing is practised on only 28 percent of surveyed projects. Concrete cube crushing tests are the most frequently performed test (conducted on 52 percent of projects), while rebar testing is conducted on only 15 percent of projects. Mean concrete cube strength at 28 days across tested projects is 22.4 N/mm2, below the target C25 specification. Mean sandcrete block compressive strength is 2.8 N/mm2, below NIS 87 minimum. Quality control failures are most common on contractor-funded projects without consultant supervision. The study recommends mandatory third-party material testing certification as a condition of building plan approval in Bayelsa State and increased regulatory enforcement by the state Ministry of Physical Planning.
