Road markings and traffic signs are fundamental road safety elements, and their deterioration reduces their effectiveness in guiding driver behaviour on federal highway corridors. This study evaluates the condition and adequacy of road markings and traffic signs on two federal highway sections in Kwara State totalling 62 kilometres. A systematic inventory and condition assessment was conducted by trained inspection teams, recording the type, location, and retroreflectivity condition of each sign and the extent and retroreflectivity of road markings. Sign condition was rated on a four-point scale from Good to Failed. Road marking retroreflectivity was measured using a hand-held retroreflectometer at 500-metre intervals. Results indicate that 48 percent of inspected signs are in Poor or Failed condition. Warning signs show the highest deterioration rate at 56 percent failing condition. Road marking retroreflectivity falls below the minimum threshold of 100 mcd/m2/lux in 71 percent of measurement locations. Mandatory signs related to speed limits and junction control are absent at 32 percent of locations where they are required. The study concludes that the road safety infrastructure on Federal highways in Kwara State is inadequate and recommends a four-year replacement and maintenance programme under the Federal Roads Safety Corps, with retroreflectivity performance standards incorporated into road management contracts.
