Filling the Gap in African Contributions to Classical Scholarship: A Meta-Analysis of African Scholars in Classical Studies

The discipline of Classical Studies globally has been shaped predominantly by European and North American scholarship, with African scholars constituting a small but growing presence in the field. A systematic meta-analysis of African scholarly contributions to Classical Studies, examining their volume, character, institutional contexts, and reception, has not previously been conducted. This study provides a systematic meta-analysis of African scholarly contributions to Classical Studies research over the period 1990 to 2023. A bibliometric and qualitative meta-analysis methodology was adopted, systematically identifying publications by African-based or African-origin classical scholars through database searching, citation network analysis, and consultation with twenty-five Classical Studies scholars working in African institutions. Publications were analysed for topic focus, methodological approach, citation impact, and institutional affiliation. Findings identify 312 publications meeting inclusion criteria, of which 67 percent focus on classical reception in African literary, cultural, or political contexts, reflecting the characteristic contribution of African classical scholarship to reception studies. Citation impact is significantly lower than comparator publications from North America and Europe, reflecting structural barriers in international academic visibility. South African scholars dominate output, followed by Egyptian and Nigerian scholars. Institutional affiliation analysis reveals significant concentrations in South Africa, with scholarly isolation as a widespread challenge for scholars elsewhere in Africa. The study provides the most comprehensive meta-analysis of African classical scholarship available and recommends an African Classical Scholars Network to address structural inequalities in scholarly visibility.
