Building a Microfinance Loan Processing System for a Community Bank in Taraba State

Community microfinance banks in Taraba State process loan applications manually, creating delays, data inconsistencies, and limited analytical capability for portfolio risk management. This study presents the development of a web-based loan processing system for a community microfinance bank in Jalingo, Taraba State. The system was built using Django and PostgreSQL, and includes modules for loan application intake, credit eligibility scoring, loan committee approval workflows, disbursement scheduling, repayment tracking, and delinquency reporting. A simple credit scoring model was implemented using customer account history and loan repayment records. Requirements were gathered from bank officers and three loan committee members through structured interviews and process mapping workshops. Development used Agile Scrum over eight sprints with two-weekly reviews. Functional testing covered 100 test cases, achieving 94 percent pass rate on initial run. A two-month pilot processed 185 loan applications, reducing average processing time from 18 days to 6 days. Default prediction accuracy of the credit scoring model reached 73 percent on historical data, and portfolio officers reported improved ability to monitor delinquency trends. Post-pilot surveys rated the system 4.1 out of 5.0 by bank staff. The study concludes that affordable digital loan management systems are accessible to community banks in northern Nigeria and recommends the bank seek funding for an expansion to include mobile money disbursement integration.
