Assessment of Corporate Communication Practices in Nigerian Oil and Gas Companies in Delta State

The Nigerian oil and gas sector operates in a context of intense public scrutiny, community relations pressure, and environmental controversy that demands sophisticated corporate communication practices. This study assessed the corporate communication strategies of selected oil and gas companies with operational presence in Delta State, South South Nigeria. A qualitative case study design was adopted, drawing on semi-structured interviews with 14 corporate communications managers from three major and two independent oil companies operating in Warri and Asaba. Document analysis of annual reports, community newsletters, and corporate social responsibility publications from 2020 to 2023 supplemented interview data. Thematic analysis was applied. Results showed that community relations communication was the most resource-intensive communication function across all five companies, consuming on average 41 percent of corporate communications budgets. All companies operated formal community liaison officer networks but only two had formal community grievance communication systems with documented response timelines. Social media use for stakeholder communication was underdeveloped relative to the companies' profiles, with only one company maintaining active community-facing social media accounts. Environmental communication, particularly regarding oil spill incidents, was characterised by reactive rather than proactive disclosure by three of five companies. The study concludes that corporate communication practice in Delta State oil companies is improving but remains reactive in its orientation toward host communities. Recommendations include mandatory proactive environmental communication disclosure protocols and independent community communication feedback audits.
