Study of Local Language Newspaper Production and Community Engagement in Yorubaland

Local language newspapers serve vital community information functions in Nigeria, yet Yoruba-language print journalism faces both production challenges and competitive pressures from digital and broadcast media that threaten its sustainability and community impact. This study examined Yoruba-language newspaper production practices and their relationship with community engagement in Oyo and Osun States, South West Nigeria. A qualitative case study design was adopted, focusing on three Yoruba-language newspapers: Alaroye, Alawiye, and Asokan, combining interviews with editors and journalists at each publication (12 total) with a readership survey administered to 200 Yoruba-speaking adults in Ibadan and Osogbo. Readership data assessed engagement patterns, content preferences, and perceived community relevance. Interview data were analysed thematically. Results showed that all three publications faced significant financial pressures, with two relying on below-market newsprint costs subsidised by institutional partnerships. Readership was older-skewed, with 73.5 percent of survey respondents aged above 40. Community social news (births, deaths, weddings, chieftaincy) was the most valued content type among readers (72.0 percent). Younger non-readers cited unavailability of digital editions as the primary engagement barrier. Editors identified reader revenue sustainability and advertiser preference for English-language media as the most critical production constraints. The study concludes that Yoruba-language newspapers fill a community communication gap for older demographics but face a generational readership cliff without digital adaptation, and recommends hybrid print-digital publishing models and advertiser sensitivity campaigns.
