Strategic Management of Nigerian Print Media Houses in the Digital Transition Era

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Nigerian print media organisations face an existential strategic challenge from digital disruption, requiring deliberate management decisions about digital transformation, business model innovation, and editorial repositioning. This study examined strategic management approaches being adopted by print media houses in Nigeria to navigate digital transition. A professional case study methodology was employed, conducting structured interviews with 20 editorial directors, business managers, and digital strategy leads from five national newspaper groups (Punch Media, Guardian Newspapers, Vanguard Media, ThisDay Media, and Tribune Publishing) supplemented by financial performance data analysis and digital platform metrics review where publicly available. Assessment dimensions covered digital revenue strategies, paywall implementation, audience data capabilities, content repurposing practices, newsroom structural changes, and workforce transformation management. Results showed that digital subscription models had been attempted by three of five organisations but with varying success, with one achieving profitability from digital subscriptions. All five organisations had invested in mobile-first content development, though with uneven editorial commitment. Diversification into events, training, and ancillary digital services was adopted as a revenue strategy by four organisations. Staff reductions and reorganisation had been managed reactively rather than through planned transformation frameworks in all five cases. The study recommends that Nigerian print media groups adopt explicit five-year digital transition strategic plans with identified revenue diversification milestones and invest in audience data infrastructure as a core strategic asset.
